CATALOGUE OF THE LOST:PLACES
excerpt from lecture

It’s not unheard of for place names to disappear. Sometimes they disappear along with the places themselves. Other times the place itself is only a hoped for concept...

133 that never really existed at all. Other long lost places were named to commemorate the
psychological state of the explorer

134 at the time of discovery.....such as....

135 relief
136
137 or dismay

138 or homesickness-- and of course many times what the explorers were naming were
other peoples’ homes....many of which

139 already had names

140
141 which were replaced
142
143
144 which are now in the process of being

145 changed back again, since these names are just about lost to the descendants of the people who named them.
